Running a Window AC on a Power Station

Window and portable ACs are one of the toughest loads on this site — not because they draw huge continuous power, but because their compressor's startup surge trips undersized units that looked perfectly adequate on paper.

Inverter AC vs standard AC — a real difference

Inverter-type window ACs run continuously at a lower, more efficient wattage — around 710W — with a comparatively modest startup surge.

Standard (non-inverter) window ACs cycle the compressor fully on and off, and that startup spike can reach roughly 2,010W even though the unit's running wattage looks similar to an inverter model on the spec sheet. Two ACs with near-identical running watts can need very different power stations because of this.

Why this project requires a confirmed pure sine wave inverter

An AC compressor is a motor-driven inductive load, the same category as a well or sump pump. A modified sine wave inverter forces the compressor to work harder to extract the same power, showing up as overheating and inefficient operation over repeated cycles — not a one-time inconvenience.

This is why window-ac-hvac-backup.json carries the same hard disqualifier as well-pump.json: an unconfirmed or non-pure-sine-wave inverter is excluded outright, not just scored lower.
