Expandable vs Standalone
Capacity isn't the only thing that changes between power stations — some let you grow that capacity later without buying a whole new unit, and whether that matters to you depends heavily on which use-case you're buying for.
The three categories this project tracks
Expandable units accept add-on battery packs to grow total capacity over time. EcoFlow's DELTA Pro 3, for example, can scale from its base 4,096Wh up to a 12-48kWh whole-home system by adding packs — you're not locked into your day-one purchase.
Standalone units are fixed at their built-in capacity. Simpler and often cheaper per Wh at purchase, but if your needs grow, you're buying a second unit rather than expanding the first.
DC-only units (like Anker's SOLIX C300 DC in this dataset) are a distinct category entirely — no AC inverter at all, meaning they can't power standard AC-plug devices regardless of capacity. This isn't a smaller standalone unit, it's a fundamentally different kind of product.
Why this matters more for some use-cases than others
This project's formulas weight expandability highest for off-grid-cabin (20%) and rv-vanlife (15%) — both long-term, evolving-needs situations where a growth path has real value. It's weighted lower for home-backup (10%), and not scored at all for one-off, short-duration use-cases like camping or outdoor events, where you're very unlikely to be adding battery packs to a weekend kit.
Key Facts At a Glance
- 'Expandable' units let you add battery packs later to grow total capacity without replacing the whole unit — EcoFlow DELTA Pro 3 can scale from 4,096Wh up to 12-48kWh this way
- 'Standalone' units are fixed at their built-in capacity — simpler, but you're locked into that ceiling
- 'DC-only' units (like Anker SOLIX C300 DC) have no AC inverter at all — a distinct category, not just a smaller standalone unit
