The real numbers
A Level 1 EVSE (the standard portable charging cable that ships with most EVs) draws a sustained ~1,440W the entire time it's plugged in and charging.
That translates to roughly 2-5 miles of range per hour of charging, depending on the vehicle's efficiency.
A 4,000Wh power station gives you roughly 4-10 miles of range โ genuinely an emergency-only amount, not a road-trip solution.
Why continuous output matters more than surge here
Unlike a well pump or AC compressor, EV charging doesn't have a large motor-startup spike โ it's a steady, sustained draw for as long as charging continues. That's why this project's ev-charging.json use-case weights ac_output_margin and capacity_margin equally at 35% each, rather than emphasizing surge headroom the way well-pump or window-ac-hvac-backup do.
